Hearing Evaluations

Hearing loss affects people of all ages. Seeking treatment with a professional audiologist at the onset of symptoms is important, especially for children. Studies show that the most critical time for language development is between birth and two years of age.

At Ears Hearing Health Care, we provide comprehensive hearing evaluations for children and adults in the Indio, La Quinta, and Palm Desert, California communities.

All of our hearing evaluations begin with a brief consultation, in which we will ask patients (or caregivers) questions regarding medical and hearing loss history, including:

  • Why did you schedule this appointment? What symptoms are you (or your child) experiencing? What are your concerns? Expectations?
  • Do you have a family history of hearing loss?
  • Has there been any exposure to loud noises?
  • Are there certain activities or environments that cause the most difficulty hearing?

After obtaining this important information, we’ll move on to the testing portion of your hearing evaluation, starting with an otoscopy, where we’ll do a visual check of your ear with an otoscope, looking for wax buildup, debris, inflammation and infection.

For older children and adults, we perform:

  • Tympanometry – This type of test which measures air pressure changes through the middle ear and checks for presence of fluid or a hole in the ear drum.
  • Pure-Tone Audiometry – A behavioral test that is used to gauge the softest sound that’s you can hear in varying frequencies. Each ear is tested separately.
  • Speech Audiometry – Is used to assess your ability to comprehend speech and recognize words.

For our youngest patients, who are unable to provide behavioral feedback, our hearing evaluations include:

  • Otoacoustic Emission Testing- Checks sound waves by using a tiny probe, placed just inside your baby’s ear canal. It measures the response when clicks or tones are played into the ears. It is quick and painless and can even be performed when your child is sleeping.

Upon completion of the hearing evaluation, we’ll sit down with you, discuss the results of your tests as well as possible solutions and make physician referrals, if necessary.

If your results indicate that hearing aids will be beneficial, we work with you to find the best devices for your needs.

At Ears, our goal is to help improve your quality of life through better hearing. We provide comprehensive, compassionate hearing healthcare, including extensive hearing evaluations and individualized treatment solutions, to patients of all ages in Indio, La Quinta and the surrounding Palm Desert communities in California.
